In collaboration with the Accounting MOVE Project

Exploring how firms can redesign work to retain experienced talent amid growing caregiving demands.
Public accounting relies heavily on experienced professionals in their peak earning and leadership years. Yet many mid-career leaders — particularly those between ages 40 and 60 — are navigating unprecedented caregiving demands at the same time they are expected to carry client relationships, mentor teams, and advance toward partnership.
They are holding the line at home and at work.
Caring for aging parents.
Supporting children or young adults.
Managing peak-career workloads during a shrinking talent pipeline.
The pressure is rising — and firms are already seeing the impact in elevated turnover, stalled advancement, and early exits from leadership tracks.
In 2026, the Accounting MOVE Project will examine the economic, cultural, and structural impact of caregiving on retention and advancement in public accounting — and identify how firms can redesign work so experienced professionals do not become the profession’s most preventable loss.
