A National Collaboration for a National Challenge
The Center for Accounting Transformation partnered with the Illinois CPA Society to expand its CPA pipeline research into a national study. The Center designed and distributed the survey, managed data collection, and served as a neutral third party to ensure data integrity and participant privacy, while also providing academic support to strengthen analysis and validate findings.
Amid a growing talent shortage—driven by declining enrollments, fewer CPA candidates, and shifting perceptions of the profession—this research moves beyond surface-level symptoms to uncover the true drivers behind the pipeline decline. Building on the Illinois CPA Society’s 2020 report, Decoding the Decline, the updated national study brings data, clarity, and collaboration to one of the profession’s most urgent challenges.
Why This Research Matters
The CPA pipeline challenge isn’t the result of a single issue. It’s shaped by:
- Misunderstandings about what accountants do
- Perceptions about workload and lifestyle
- Financial barriers to pursuing the credential
- Lack of early exposure to accounting career pathways
- Shifting definitions of purpose and professional identity
Through this expanded study, we gathered insights from students, recent graduates, and emerging accounting professionals under 35. Their voices help illuminate:
- Why many young professionals no longer view the CPA as essential
- Why exam completion rates continue to fall
- How stereotypes and outdated narratives influence career decisions
- What the profession can do—collectively—to strengthen the pipeline
The updated findings offer clear, actionable direction for educators, employers, state societies, and regulators who are committed to ensuring a strong and sustainable future for the CPA profession.

Re-Decoding the Decline: An Updated View of the CPA Pipeline Crisis
Using proprietary data from the Illinois CPA Society’s pipeline survey, we explore factors affecting the decision to pursue a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) credential. The survey asked about their intention to pursue a CPA, whether they expected to be a CPA, the value of the CPA, and their intention to pursue credentials other than the CPA. Using 7,780 survey responses from students and young professionals, we find that both intrinsic and external factors affect the decision to pursue a CPA certification. We also find differences in the student and non-student subsamples. We perform textual analysis using responses to open-ended questions and find that participants identify financial concerns, mental health, work-life balance, and perceived value of the credential as factors in their decision. Overall, our results provide insight into why students and young professionals choose to pursue a CPA credential and suggest areas of focus for improving the accounting pipeline.
